Nearly everyone wakes up puffier than they went to bed. It is one of those things that feels like a problem with you specifically until you find out it happens to more or less everybody. Here is what is actually going on, what makes it worse, and what genuinely helps.
The short version
You have been lying flat for eight hours. Fluid that gravity normally pulls down towards your feet has had nowhere to go, so some of it settles in the softest, loosest tissue you own. That happens to be your face, and particularly the skin under your eyes, which is the thinnest on your body.
Stand up, move around, and most of it sorts itself out within an hour or two. That is the whole mechanism for most people on most mornings. It is not damage and it is not a sign that something is wrong.
What makes it worse
Salt the night before
A salty dinner means your body holds onto more water overnight. Takeaway, crisps, olives, cured meat, most restaurant food. This is probably the single most reliable predictor of a puffy morning and it is the easiest one to test on yourself.
Alcohol
Two separate effects at once. Alcohol dehydrates you, and a dehydrated body holds onto the water it has. It also disrupts sleep quality even when it makes you fall asleep faster.
Short or broken sleep
Puffiness is worse after five hours than after eight, and worse after eight broken hours than eight solid ones.
Crying, a cold, or hay fever
All three inflame the tissue around the eyes and nose. Hay fever in particular produces exactly the under-eye puffiness people usually blame on sleep.
Sleeping face down
If you sleep on your front with your face in the pillow, fluid pools where your face is lowest. Front sleepers get noticeably more of this than back sleepers.
Where you are in your cycle
Fluid retention in the few days before a period is normal and it shows up in the face along with everywhere else.
What actually helps
Get upright and move
Unglamorous and by far the most effective thing on this list. Gravity did this and gravity undoes it. Ten minutes on your feet does more than anything you can put on your skin.
Cold
Cold makes blood vessels contract, which is why a cold flannel, a chilled spoon, a splash of cold water or a cold stone tool all take the edge off the look of it. The effect is real and it is temporary, which is fine, because so is the puffiness.
Cold is also the only bit of this that is genuinely pleasant, which matters more than people admit. A thing you enjoy doing is a thing you keep doing.
An extra pillow
Sleeping with your head slightly higher than your chest means less fluid settles in your face overnight. Cheap, and it works from the first night.
Water, genuinely
Counterintuitive, but a body that is short of water holds onto what it has. Being properly hydrated the day before makes a visible difference the next morning.
Caffeine, taken normally
A coffee is a mild diuretic and gets you upright and moving, which is really the active ingredient.
When it is worth mentioning to a doctor
Ordinary morning puffiness is symmetrical, mild, and gone within a couple of hours. Worth getting checked if yours is:
- On one side only, consistently
- Sudden and severe, especially with any difficulty breathing or swallowing, which needs urgent attention
- Painful, hot, or with a rash
- Still there in the afternoon, day after day
- Accompanied by swelling in your hands, ankles or feet
None of those are what this article is about, and none of them are solved by a face roller.
Where the cold tools come in
Cold works. The only real question is what you want to hold against your face for ten minutes, and stone is the pleasant answer because it holds its temperature for a long time and does not need to be re-chilled halfway through.
A stone eye mask covers the area that shows it first. A full face mask is heavier and covers everything, and the weight is a separate pleasure from the cold. Either lives in the fridge door and comes out when you need it.
What we are not claiming
We sell these and we are still not going to tell you a stone drains your lymphatic system or removes toxins. Cold constricts blood vessels, that is well understood, and the effect on how a puffy face looks is temporary. Everything above about sleep, salt and gravity will do more for you than any object will.
